Excursions Program:

Wednesday 6, August

Siena, Chianti, San Gimignano

A beautiful excursion through the delightful hills of the Chianti countryside, with an ever-changing scenery of vineyards and olive trees.
Upon arrival in Siena, a guided tour of the old city centre: walking along the small medieval streets, admiring the splendid palaces and ending up at the Cathedral. The guided tour will end in the Piazza del Campo, one of the most beautiful in the world, where you will find the Palazzo del Comune. Free time for lunch (not included).
Departure for San Gimignano, a tiny city that has remained intact through the centuries; situated on a hilltop, it is famous for its numerous towers, frescoes and other art treasures; free time to discover this fascinating city. During the return journey, along the way a brief visit to the the old mediaeval village of Monteriggioni enclosed by its famous walls, still intact.

Full day excursion to Siena and S.Gimignano, with additional visit to the Castello di Monteriggioni. Bus will leave from the Mediterraneo and will stop at the Alexander to pick up participants residing there.

 


 

 

Thursday 7, August

Lucca, Pisa


Upon arrival in the elegant and refined town of Lucca, a pleasant walk with our tour escort will take you along the famous sixteenth century walls, then entering into the enchanting historical centre where you will have the chance to admire the amazing Piazza Anfiteatro, the Torre Guinigi, the Duomo di San Martino and the typical “antique dealers’ street”. After some free time, departure for the historical town of Pisa, renowned for its architectural masterpieces. Upon arrival in Pisa, free time for lunch (not included). Then guided walking tour of Piazza dei Miracoli, with the celebrated Leaning Tower, the Baptistry and other important monuments. This is followed by a visit to the interior of the Cathedral, an unrivalled masterpiece of Romanesque art constructed between the 11th and 12th centuries.

Friday 8, August

During the Conference, guided tours of Florence, visit to the Uffizi Gallery, and more. This program is mainly for non-attendees.

On Aug.8, at 15.00 all interested parties should meet in Piazza Signoria at the corner with Via Vacchereccia, in front of the Caffe Rivoire. The tourist guide will have a placard marked "EME 2008". The activities will include a visit to the Uffizi Museum (one and a half hours), and a walk through the historical landmarks of downtown Florence

Saturday 9 August

Ladies' program:


Transportation from Florence to the Prada outlet store, free time for shopping. Transportation to The Mall, a prestigious outlet mall, with a number of high fashion stores (Gucci - Giorgio Armani - Fendi - Ferragamo - Y.S. Laurent - Valentino - Ungaro - Zegna - Bottega Veneta).
Free time for shopping and a snack at the elegant Mall Cafe' (not included).

On Saturday,Aug.9, visit to the fashion outlets, leaving at approx 8 a.m. with return around 1 p.m.. Participants will be picked up at the Mediterraneo and the Alexander

 


Monday 11 August

Transportation from Florence to the Villa Griffone, near Bologna, where the early Marconi experiments were carried out, and visit to the Marconi Memorial.

At the end, transportation to the Medicina Radioastronomy Center, and visit to the Croce del Nord (Northern Cross) radiotelescope. Then visit to the IQ4DF 10 Ghz. EME station, a short distance away. BBQ before ride back to Florence.

Pharmacy

Another interesting program is a visit to the centuries-old Santa Maria Novella pharmacy,with its historic furniture and equipment; it is still active today and produces exclusive scents. Visit lasts about 30 minutes, for groups of visitors numbering max 25.
